Once upon a time I was in India, at the Sri Narayani guesthouse in Tamil Nadu.
It was the last day of about my tenth visit there. I was called up to the guesthouse rooftop by Nathalie, a French/Australian who is one of the very few Westerners allowed to live there full time.
She said she wanted to teach me a mantra.
I said sure!
Nathalie is just a regular gal like you or me but she lives at this sacred ashram and I do believe she is doing the will of the Divine. Nathalie thinks I should learn a mantra, I’ll learn it!
So under the burning hot sun, Nathalie pulls out a pen and paper and writes down:
Hari Om
Nam Lam
Mam Vam
Sim Ram
Vam Yum
Yum Hum
Siva Om
Swaha
I can’t remember if she explained it to me at the time or someone else did later but I know now that this mantra is made up for the beej mantra sounds for the chakras and the sounds of the 5 elements (earth, fire, air, water and ether). Hari Om is like the intro and Swaha is like the outro.
The vibrations for the 5 elements are below.
(The first ever mention of these mantras was in the Jabala Darsana Upanishad, written between 200BC and 200AD.)
Ether – Haum
Earth – Lam
Water – Vam
Fire – Ram
Air – Yam
The vibrations for the chakras are also in the chant
LAM Root Chakra
VAM Sacral Chakra
RAM Solar Plexus Chakra
YAM Heart Chakra
HAM Throat Chakra
SIVA (Shiva) OM Third Eye Chakra
This is one of the chants I use most often in my New and Full Moon ceremonies.
Just FYI.
I did this chant at the start of every one of my free Moon training workshops this week. Hope you caught them!
That’s over now but you can still catch my 50% off / $200 discount offer if you love the idea of working with the Moon and teaching other people about it too!
