Is there a ‘proper’ way to learn astrology?

When I started to learn astrology 20 years ago, it was a very higgledy-piggledy and informal process.

At the time, I had a friend who was in astrology guiding me. She would send me emails that would send me down rabbit holes of information, in no particular order of what really I should or shouldn’t be learning.

• I had a particular interest in learning about making predictions (and still do!), so I kind of jumped to that before I even got to know about natal astrology.

In retrospect, I think that was kind of backwards, though I must say it was fascinating!

So it got me to thinking, is there a proper way to learn astrology?

Answer: Maybe!

Here are a few ideas you need to get your head around as you start, whether you’re doing a formal course or a little FREE one like this one! 

As you learn astrology, you need to ask yourself these questions…

1. What are the planets all about?

When it comes to the planets, you really do need to start just with the basics; the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Each of these planets has some keywords which are kind of like what you could call the headlines which describes them.

For example…

* The Sun is the essential you, your ego and who you really are.

* The Moon, as you will have learned if you just did my free mini-course, is all about what you need, your feelings, and what feeds you as a person.

* Venus, is the planet of relating and love and abundance while Mars is all about sex and drive and determination.

And so on.

So the first thing is really to get your head around the planets and then find out where they are on your birth chart. You can find that out for free here.

2. What are the signs all about?

One of my first astrology teachers used to say that the signs are like the clothes the planets wear.

So for example a Sun dressed in Aries clothing is going to be hot and red and fiery, as compared to, say, the Sun dressed in Piscean clothing is going to be cool and blue and watery, mystical and wafty.

Understanding the 12 signs is easier to do than you might imagine.

It’s amazing how much we all pick up about astrology just by being interested.

Once you start to understand that your Venus, for example, is in Sagittarius, and Venus is about what you love, and Sagittarius is about travel and adventure and study, and the great cosmic quest to understand life, and life philosophies, you start to understand why you love the things you do.

3. What are the Houses all about?

The third basic that you need to start to understand if you want to get a real grip on astrology is the so called houses.

These are 12 sectors of your chart which represents different parts of your life.

For example, you have the 7th house which is all about relationships or the 2nd an eighth houses, which are both more or less about money, or the 10th house which is about your career and ambitions, or the 6th house which is about your daily life.

So then you say OK I have my Mercury in Gemini in my third house… for example… no wonder I’m a writer, since Mercury is all about communications, Gemini is the sign that loves to communicate and the 3rd house is the communication zone.
